You already use the Socratic method

Your kid gets in the car and you ask how the book is. "It was boring."

You could leave it there. Instead you say: "Boring how?"

And then something happens. They say the main character never actually decides anything, stuff just keeps happening to him, and it got annoying. Which is — and I want to be precise here — a genuine piece of literary criticism, produced by a twelve-year-old, in a car, ninety seconds after "it was boring."

You just used the Socratic method. That's the whole thing.

What it actually is

Teaching by asking instead of telling. You don't supply the idea; you ask the question that makes the other person produce it.

Socrates — whose name got stuck to it — insisted he had nothing to teach anyone. He compared himself to a midwife: present at the birth, useful, but the baby was never his. Ideas already in the room, drawn out by questions.

The reason it survived 2,400 years of educational fashion isn't sentiment. It's that something real happens when a person generates an answer instead of receiving one.

Why asking beats telling

Two things are going on, and both have been studied properly.

The first is that you remember what you produce better than what you're given. Researchers call it the generation effect, and it's one of the sturdier findings in memory research — a 2007 review pooling 445 comparisons across 86 studies found a consistent advantage for generating over reading (Bertsch and colleagues, Memory & Cognition). Fair warning: most of those were laboratory memory tasks, not essays. It establishes the principle, not the whole claim.

The second is closer to home. When students are prompted to explain — asked why something is true, how it connects, what their reasoning was — they learn more than students who are handed the explanation. A 2018 meta-analysis of 64 studies put the effect at moderate-to-large and found it held across most school subjects (Bisra and colleagues, Educational Psychology Review).

That's the mechanism, and it's the one that matters here: a question makes a kid do the thinking; an answer lets them skip it.

Teachers have a name for the supporting half — scaffolding, from a 1976 paper by Wood, Bruner and Ross describing help that lets a learner reach something "beyond his unassisted efforts," then gets removed as they steady. Note the second half. Scaffolding that never comes down isn't scaffolding. It's a crutch.

Why it feels slow

Because it is slow. That's not a flaw in the execution; it's the mechanism working.

Telling your kid what their thesis should be takes eleven seconds. Asking until they find it can take twenty minutes, and about eight of those minutes are uncomfortable — the ones where they're stuck and you're saying nothing.

The hardest part of doing this at home isn't finding a clever question. It's the pause after it. Most of us can't tolerate four seconds of a kid struggling before we fill the silence with the answer, and filling it is exactly what cancels the effect. If you want one thing to practise, practise the pause.

Where it doesn't work at all

Here's the part that gets left out of the inspirational version, and it's the most useful thing in this post.

Questioning fails when the kid doesn't have the raw material yet. If they haven't read the chapter, no question will produce an insight about it — you'll just get guesses, and guessing under pressure is a genuinely bad way to learn. This is the consistent limitation in the research on classroom questioning: it works when learners can answer from something they actually know, and it goes badly when they can't.

So the method has a real boundary. Ask a kid to reason about their own reading, their own argument, their own experience, and questions are powerful. Ask them to Socratically deduce the causes of World War I from an empty head and you've invented a slower, more humiliating lecture.

Which is exactly what our coach is built on
